Jonathan Mockshell is Senior Agricultural Economist, Agrifood Sustainability and Innovation System at the CGIAR Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT, and Co-leader of the CGIAR Digital Food System Innovation Evidence Clearing House. Dr. Mockshell also leads the Decision, Evidence and Policy Analysis Food System Lab (DEP-FSLab). At the DEP-FSLab, his research for development is at the interface of agrifood sustainability, food system innovations, and nutrition sensitive agriculture. Prior to his current research, Dr. Mockshell conducted empirical work on sustainable agriculture, food policy and agricultural policy processes in Africa. Dr. Mockshell’s interest is in leveraging data analytics to generate evidence for decision-making to solve triple sector failures and promote agricultural development. With evidence, he engages in formal and alternative policy processes to nudge policy decision-making, re-orient investments and catalyze incentives to scale-out sustainable innovations for accelerating food systems transformation.
Dr. Mockshell is currently a principal investigator for collaborative projects: “Linking research to impact: Increasing the effectiveness of agriculture and food systems in improving nutrition” funded by IFAD, “Maintaining agrifood value chain flows during the COVID-19 pandemic: The procurement of produce and its impact on food security” funded by CGIAR, and “Agroecological transitions: Private sector incentives and investments” funded by the EU Commission. He is an associate research fellow at the German Development Institute in Bonn and a member of the sustainable food systems program of the United Nations 10 Year Framework of Programs on Sustainable Consumption and Production. Prior to joining the CGIAR International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in 2017 in Colombia, Dr. Mockshell was a Research Fellow at the German Development Institute in Bonn (2016-2017), and Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of Hohenheim (2012-2016).
