UG Vice-Chancellor, Dean School of Agriculture and Other Senior Officials tour Forest & Horticultural Crops Research Centre in Okumaning, Kade - APRIL 2022

 

As part of the University Management’s tour of the Research Centres, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, D and other Senior University Officials have paid a working visit to the Forest and Horticultural Crops Research Centre (FOHCREC) in Okumaning, Kade. 

Dr. Francis Collison Brentu, Head, FOHCREC, welcomed the University officials together with his team and presented a brief overview of the Centre’s activities. His presentation drew on the Centre’s historical background, research impact, collaborations and production. 

The Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude to the staff of the Centre for their hospitableness and led a stakeholder engagement on the purpose and the expectation of the visit. 

During the visit, the officials toured various plantation sites of the Centre. Dr. Brentu who served as the tour guide noted the Centre’s plans to expand the rubber plantation from 12 acres to 45 acres over the next 70 years. He also explained that 50 out of the 250 acres of the cocoa farm has been re-planted over the last 10 years, whilst the 320-acres oil palm plantation which is the main source of funds for the Centre has just been replanted. The touring team also visited FOHCREC’s greenhouse plantation, lake, dam and the cola farm. 

Prof. Amfo seized the opportunity to donate a pick-up to the Centre to enhance its activities.

As part of the visit, the Vice-Chancellor led the delegation of senior University officials to call on the Chief of Okumaning, Kade, Osabarima Adu-Gyamfi III. 

Welcoming the University’s delegation, Osabarima Adu-Gyamfi III expressed delight about the visit, which was the first of its kind. He conveyed the desire of the traditional area to see the University excel and pledged his support.  

Prof. Amfo thanked Osabarima Adu-Gyamfi III for the warm reception and expressed gratitude to him for his significant support of the Centre’s activities. She further solicited for the support of the stool in maximising the potential of FOHCREC. 

Opanyin Kojo Mensah, Abusuapanyin, used the occasion to express the profound gratitude of the traditional area to Prof. Boateng Onwona‐Agyeman, Provost, College of Basic and Applied Sciences, for his excellent cordial relations.

Other members of the traditional area present were Nana Antwi Boasiako, Chief’s Abusuapanyin; Opanyin John Mensah, Sanaahene and Opanyin Kwasi Abore, Chief’s Secretary.

The Centre’s team comprised Prof. Samuel Adjei-Nsiah; Dr. Lemuel Ohemeng Mintah and Dr. Stephen Kwame Torkpo, Senior Research Fellows. The rest are Dr. Eric Oppong Danso, Dr. Jacob Ulzen, Dr. Thomas Buxton and Dr. Alfred Asumining Boakye who are Research Fellows.
