SEMINAR PRESENTATION ON MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMNET AND ADVERSE HEALTH OUTCOMES.

In line with its commitment to diversity, environmental technologies to reduce pollution and related health risk, Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, School of Agriculture, University of Ghana, partnered with the University of Brescia, Italy to present on the topic: Municipal Waste Management and Adverse Health Outcomes. Prof. Irene S. Egyir, the Dean of School of Agriculture offered a welcomed address to all participants and introduced the presenters, professor Mentore Vaccari and Dr. Giovanni Vinti (University of Brescia). The profile of the presenters was shared by the head of Department for Agricultural economics and Agribusiness who is in person of Prof. Mensah Akwasi-Mensah Bonsu.

During the seminar, professor Vaccari, with the support of Dr. Vinti, discussed appropriate environmental technologies to reduce pollution and related human health risks. The speakers focused on solid wastes organic fraction valorisation. Prof. Mentore elucidated that, indeed, in many countries the organic fraction of solid waste represents more than half of municipal solid waste. Thus, the appropriate management of waste can significantly reduce the need for disposal. He added that, the organic waste can be converted into compost (material recovery) or biogas (energy recovery) by using appropriate technologies.

The seminar presentation ended with an illustration of an experiment performed by the University of Brescia on previously produced agricultural wastes using a non- pathogenic strain applied to contaminated soil.

Dr. Naalamle Amissah, Head of Research Committee and the Head of Department for Crop Science led the Question and Answers time followed by the closing Remarks given by the Dean School of  Agriculture.
