Dr. Samuel Aggrey is a Richard B Russell Professor/Chair at the Department of Poultry Science, University of Georgia, Athens, GA, USA. Professor Aggrey obtained his BSc degree in Animal Science at the University of Ghana, Legon, MSc with Distinction at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and PhD in Quantitative Genetics and Poultry Breeding at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He was a Canadian Science Council’s postdoctoral fellow in Molecular Genetics at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He joined University of Georgia as an Assistant Professor in the year 2000, and became a full rank professor in 2010. In the year 2020, he was awarded an endowed chair as the Richard B Russell Professor. He is also an affiliate member of the Institute of Bioinformatics at the University of Georgia and an affiliate scientist at Biosciences East and Central Africa (International Livestock Research Institute, Kenya). He is currently a visiting Professor at the Department of Animal Science at the University of Ghana.
His research areas include nutrigenomics, molecular basis of stressors (heat, Eimeria species, Salmonella, etc.), genotype-nutrition interactions, developing statistical models for genome selection. Dr. Aggrey is a co-editor of “Poultry Genetics, Breeding and Biotechnology” and the lead editor for “Advances in Poultry Genetics and Genomics”. He has authored several book chapters and over 150 peer reviewed research publications. He has trained several postgraduate students and postdocs throughout the world, and maintains collaborative partnerships in Africa, Asia and Europe. His notable awards include the Jaap Memorial Lectureship at the Ohio State University, the D.W. Brooks Award of Excellence for Research, Career Development Recognition (the University of Georgia), The Broiler Research Award (Poultry Science Association), Changxin Chu Fund (China Agricultural University Educational Foundation/World Poultry Science Association), Carnegie Fellowship (Carnegie Institute), and World’s Poultry Science Association P. B. Siegel Research Award.
