School of Agriculture NSS Week Celebration

SOA NSS Week Celebration, Monday March 14 – Friday March 18, 2022

The School of Agriculture organized a National Service Week to celebrate all Personnel posted into its constituent Departments. The theme of the week-long programme was “Promoting Youth Engagement in Agricultural Development”.

The line of events began on Monday March 14, 2022 with a clean-up campaign of facilities within the School of Agriculture. Service Personnel jointly cleaned up the surroundings of all Departments and the forecourt of the School. The exercise was supervised by the Coordinator of the NSS Week Celebration, Dr. Comfort Freeman of the Department of Agricultural Extension.

On Tuesday March, 15, 2022, the students were given the opportunity to showcase their final year project work which had been converted into posters. The posters and presentations of the information and findings as displayed were presented by respective NSS Personnel and scores were given by some selected Senior Faculty.  At the end, four posters were adjudged best; from the Departments of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension and Crop Science. Faculty present were Prof. Eric Nartey, Prof. Boniface Kayang, Dr. Naalamle Amissah and Dr. Freda Asem.

The poster session was followed on day 3, March 16, 2022, by a forum on career options. The Kosmos Innovation Centre, a collaborator of the School and an organization committed to increasing awareness of agricultural opportunities and the associated entrepreneurial benefits, took the opportunity to educate participants on career options in the Agricultural value chain. In his presentation, Mr. Stanley Amamu, the National Corporate Responsibility Specialist and Programmes Coordinator of KIC outlined the series of programmes that had been rolled out by the organization to reach and support the youth (ranging from high school students to medium scale business owners). He further encouraged students present to sign up for the upcoming KIC Agritech Challenge.

The forum continued with the 13th edition of the School’s Alumni Passing Through series and the presentation was delivered by the Managing Director of Ghana Commercial Bank, Mr. Kofi Adomakoh (BSc Agriculture-Agriultural Economics Major, 1990) on the theme: Building Collaborative Leadership and High Performance Teams. In his presentation, he emphasized that building collaborative leaderships borders on teamwork and the ability to bring the appropriate people together to create strategies for redressing shared concerns of the organization. Collaborative leadership help to address issues through establishing mutual trust, ensuring all concerns are heard and ultimately, helping the individual find common ground to work together.

On Thursday, March 17, 2022, the Dean, Prof. Irene Egyir, led a trip to the Legon Botanical Gardens. The students made their way on the canopy walk and ended with an exciting relationship circle talk. She shared her personal experiences and used the opportunity to advise the students in their relationships and choice of partners. The students were treated with a sumptuous lunch after the Excursion.

The week’s celebration ended with indoor games at the School’s premises on Friday March 19, 2022. The students also had the opportunity to interact with themselves as they had a lot of fun while playing the games of Monopoly, Ludo, Chess, Oware, amongst others.
